Measure the room and the way in
Measure the doorway, lift and tight turns on the stairs. Ask for the dimensions of the largest piece you’ll have to carry. In the room, leave enough space to open doors and walk past the sofa.
For a corner sofa, ask for a front-facing photo that shows which side is longer. For a sofa bed, ask for the size when open. For a recliner, check how much space it needs to lean back.
Sit on it and check underneath
Try each seat to see if it still supports you. Check the frame and legs for loose joints. Look under the cushions for stains, damp or signs of pests. If the sofa opens into a bed or reclines, ask to try it.
Agree on pickup and the full cost
Confirm where you can see the sofa. Ask who will carry it out, whether any parts can come off, and what the transport and loading will cost. Check who will carry it upstairs at the other end. Include cleaning or repairs when you compare prices.
Selling your sofa?
Photograph the front, sides, back and any damage. Include the dimensions, number of seats, fabric or finish and asking price. Show how it opens if it turns into a bed, or photograph the long side if it’s a corner sofa. Tell buyers if they’ll need to use stairs or a lift at pickup.
